‘Smart Home' Built for Wounded Veteran in Maryland

A wounded veteran now has a new home that can help with all his needs.

Capt. Luis Avila was injured when an improvised bomb exploded in 2011. He lost his left leg and suffered two strokes, two heart attacks and brain damage. Because of his injuries, simple tasks around his home can be a challenge.

But thanks to the Gary Sinise Foundation, Avila and his family are now the proud owners of a new "smart home" in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

With the touch of a sensor or iPad, Avila can now go in and out of any door in his smart home with ease. There's an elevator, a specialized bathtub and shower and wide spaces that allow Avila to maneuver his wheelchair.

The home will be a new start for Avila, his wife and three children.

"This house is going to provide some support for this family for the rest of their lives," said actor Gary Sinise "This is what we call his forever home.

The Gary Sinise Foundation says in a statement that the ceremony Friday in Chevy Chase marks the completion of one of more than 50 "smart homes'' that the organization has built or is building for wounded veterans and their families.

Sinise played a wounded veteran, Lt. Dan Taylor, in the Oscar-winning movie "Forrest Gump.''
