Pipes Burst in Loudoun County Homes During Utility Work

Pipes burst in the houses of five families in Loudoun County, causing them to evacuate -- and  residents say the town is to blame.

"This is our Katrina," Leesburg, Va. resident Laura Morar said. The "dream home" she shares with her husband and 2-year-old was soaked by water last week.

Morar -- who is expecting her family's second child in just a few weeks -- is expecting her family will be out of their home and living in a rental for at least six months.

"It’s the worst possible timing," she said.

The flooding at The Lakes at Red Rock townhouses started as workers were repairing a water line on Edwards Ferry Road, residents said. With the work underway, Morar said she hear a huge boom.

"One of the neighbors said that she thought an airplane crashed into the backyard," she said.

The town is investigating the cause of the surge and has hired an engineer to investigate.

“We are absolutely committed to finding out how this happened, why this happened, and making sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Leesburg spokeswoman Betsy Fields.

In the meantime, the affected families are covering the costs of the damage.
