Close Call for Firefighters Responding to Northwest DC House Fire

A crew of D.C. firefighters is safe Monday night after they briefly were feared to be trapped inside a burning house.

A century-old, wood-frame house on the 1400 block of Delafield Place NW caught fire before 9 p.m. The two-alarm blaze spread quickly, and with firefighters still inside, the whole house burst into flames.

"The fire spread so quickly when they were inside the house that all of us immediately got worried that they were all inside the house," neighbor Christopher Gerkea said. "It looked for a minute that they were trapped."

Firefighters were ordered to evacuate the building immediately.

"We were unable to keep track of a couple firefighters for a few minutes," D.C. Fire and EMS Chief Gregory Dean said.

Every firefighter soon was accounted for, and no firefighters or civilians were hurt. Officials initially said that three firefighters received minor injuries.

The family that lives in the home was displaced and staying with neighbors Monday night, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

"Everybody is safe and they are in good spirits," she said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
