Sprint Service Restored After Customers Had Issues Calling 911 in 4 Counties

An underground transformer fire affected service in the D.C. area Tuesday

Sprint service is back up and running in the D.C. area after customers reported having trouble calling 911 Tuesday.

A spokesperson from Sprint said the underground transformer fire that knocked out power to more than 14 office buildings in downtown Washington affected voice and data service in the D.C. metro area.

"We apologize to our customers and thank them for their patience," the company said on Twitter Wednesday.

Police in Fairfax County and Loudoun County in Virginia and Montgomery County and Prince George's County in Maryland said Sprint customers had issues calling 911 Tuesday.

It's not clear whether other areas in the region experienced a similar issue.

If anyone received a busy signal when they call 911, they were asked to use a landline phone or cellphone covered by another provider, police said.

In Fairfax County, people could text 911 if they needed help, police said.
