More Than 100 Without Power After Underground Transformer Fire

More than 100 Pepco customers in downtown Washington are without power Tuesday after an underground transformer caught fire overnight.

Firefighters were called to the 1800 block of L Street NW just before midnight.

Video from the scene shows flames and plumes of black smoke shooting up from a vent in the sidewalk. The flames were dangerously close to several businesses in the area.

More than 14 office buildings and 12,000 workers are affected by the power outage, according to the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District (BID).

The fire and resulting outage is also affecting voice and data service for Sprint customers.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was extinguished at 2:30 a.m.

There's no word on when power will be restored in the area.
