Driver Charged With DUI After 2 Women Hit in Arlington

The driver who police say hit two women on a sidewalk in Arlington, Virginia, Tuesday afternoon has been charged with driving under the influence.

Shahed Quayum, 49, was charged with DUI maiming, Arlington County police said Wednesday afternoon.

Police say Quayum, of Arlington, was traveling eastbound on Clarendon Boulevard when he jumped a curb and drove onto the sidewalk on the 3100 block. 

Quayum knocked over a light pole and then hit one woman, police said. Then, he continued, hitting a woman who was using an ATM. 

Police were dispatched about 2:50 p.m. 

The first woman received minor injuries. She was taken to Virginia Hospital Center.

The second woman was trapped under the SUV. She was rushed to George Washington University Hospital with serious injuries.

Both women are expected to survive, police said. 

The crash occurred outside Mad Rose Tavern, near where Clarendon Boulevard, Washington Boulevard, Wilson Boulevard and N. Irving Street intersect, west of the Clarendon Metro station. 

Quayum is due in court Thursday.
