D.C. Water CEO George Hawkins Steps Down

George Hawkins, the CEO and general manager of DC Water, is stepping down, the utilities company announced Thursday.

Hawkins, 57, joined DC Water in 2009. His resignation will become effective Dec. 29.

Hawkins has worked as a chief executive of nonprofits and government agencies. He will shift to an advisory role at DC Water’s Blue Drop nonprofit affiliate, according to the company.

"I am stepping back from a day-to-day role at a water utility, but I’m as committed as ever to the future of the water sector. I will continue to coach future leaders and provide guidance to fellow executives who want to do as we did at DC Water,” Hawkins said in a statement.

He will also continue to serve on the National Infrastructure and Advisory Council.

After informing the Board of Directors of his plans, Vice Chair Nicholas Majett showed appreciation for Hawkin’s tenure.

"The Board is grateful for George’s eight years of leadership and looks forward to an orderly transition during his remaining months at DC Water,” Majett said.
