Some Washington nonprofits are scaling back services and furloughing workers due to contracts and Medicaid reimbursements that aren't being paid during the government shutdown.
The Latin American Youth Center in Columbia Heights announced it will furlough workers and reduce its operations to essential services beginning Wednesday. The staff will continue working as volunteers until Congress restores funding.
Lori Kaplan, president of the Latin American Youth Center, announced the center will remain open to its most vulnerable clients, serving those who are homeless or in the foster care system. The center serves about 5,000 youth each year.
In Adams Morgan, the Mary's Center health facility says it could struggle to keep its doors open without Medicaid reimbursements. The charity stands to lose $525,000 this month if funding is not restored.
