Cellphone Leads Police to Arson Suspect

The discovery of a cellphone helped the Charles County Sheriff’s Department make an arrest in the recent arson of a popular sporting goods store in Waldorf, Maryland.

Sheriff’s officials say Edward White, 45, of Waldorf was arrested Thursday for the October fire at Fred’s Sports in the 2800 block of Crain Highway.

According to charging documents obtained by News4, officials said White became a suspect after officers found a cellphone behind the business the morning of the fire. The cellphone gave officers information linking White to the case, officials said.

Officers also recovered two handguns that were stolen from Fred’s Sports, according to the sheriff's department. One of the guns was on White; the other was recovered at his home.

White is being held at the Charles County Detention Center on $150,000 bond.
