Catching Red Light Runners 10 Times a Day

New Red LIght Cameras nab hundreds of violators

Two new red light cameras in the city of Falls Church, Va., have been very busy.

In the first five weeks, between Jan. 18 and Feb. 25, the cameras issued 309 citations.

The new cameras are located at the intersections of Broad and North Cherry streets, and Broad Street and Annandale Road. Drivers caught running red lights at those locations can be fined up to $50.

If you do the math, the statistics for the first five weeks of these new cameras mean that the cameras are catching people running red lights 10 times a day.

Falls Church police said the locations were selected because there are plenty of red light runners there.

In an interview with WTOP, Falls Church Vice Mayor Dave Snyder said, "We would, frankly, have cameras at many more intersections if the process (to get them up and running) wasn't so lengthy. Running through red lights and stop signs is an epidemic in northern Virginia."
