Body Found in Chesapeake Bay; Believed to Be 2nd Missing Swimmer

A charter boat captain found a body in the Chesapeake Bay Monday afternoon, and authorities believe it is that of a swimmer who went missing -- with his brother -- on Friday.

The body has not been identified. But the Calvert County Sheriff's Office said it was believed to be that of Douglas Howell Brown, 39, of Mechanicsville.

The charter boat captain made the discovery at 1:18 p.m. east of the Breezy Point Marina. The body of Douglas' brother, Daniel Jasson Brown, 37, of Lusby, was found Saturday.

The two were swimming with Daniel's son, Jason, on Friday evening near Cove Point Light Station in Calvert County when they became tired from swimming against the tide.

Witnesses in the area reported seeing three swimmers in visible distress and saw the Brown brothers disappear beneath the surface of the water.

Jason was able to make it back to shore where he alerted family members and the authorities. He told News4 that the last words that he heard from his dad were, "I love you."

Jason said the three -- all strong swimmers -- were out in the water when the tide changed, and they realized they had to come back in. They swam, but they made no headway against the current.

"The tide pulled us out a little bit, and he said we had to go back in," Jason said. "We started swimming back but we weren't making it. We were swimming in place.

"I was with my dad," Jason said, growing more emotional. "He told me he loved me. He told me to go ahead."

Douglas Brown was co-owner of Costa Brava restaurant in the Bloomindale area. The restaurant posted a comment on its Facebook page Saturday night that it had suffered a "death in the Costa family."

David Marne, of the U.S. Coast Guard, said crews from the Coast Guard station in St. Inigoes, the Calvert County Fire Department and Calvert County police still are working on the recovery effort.
