A bank robbery suspect shot a deputy and stabbed another after overpowering one of them in a holding cell Wednesday afternoon at the Fauquier County Courthouse in Warrenton, Va., according to law enforcement officials.

"One deputy was stabbed in the face with an unknown instrument and a second deputy was shot in the upper leg," said Lt. James Hartman of the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said the suspect, George Golder Phillips, 30, of Warrenton, was in a holding cell inside the courthouse awaiting a hearing when the incident occurred.

One of the deputies was flown by medical helicopter to INOVA Fairfax Hospital. The other deputy was transferred to the hospital by ambulance.

"It didn't real sound like gunshots at first but then they said we had to lock the doors and stay inside," said Alexandria Slack, who works at the courthouse. "We peeked out the window and we saw all these deputies and we saw people coming out on stretchers and so it was kind of scary."
