Arrest Warrant Obtained for Man Shot by Charles County Deputy

The Charles County Sheriff's Office says an arrest warrant has been obtained for a man who was shot after allegedly walking toward a deputy while holding a knife.

The warrant charges 49-year-old Lavon DeWayne Chisley with first-degree assault, carrying a deadly weapon with intent to injure and other offenses.

Deputies went to a Waldorf home in the 3000 block of Charleton Court on Wednesday evening after a resident called 911 three times to report a fight. Authorities say two deputies arrived at the home and saw Chisley in the front yard, holding a knife and appeared to be agitated.

Officials say Chisley refused commands to drop the weapon and approached a deputy, who fired and struck him in the abdomen.

Chisley was flown to a hospital and was alert and conscious. He remains hospitalized.

Authorities said the deputy who shot him, Jose Marti, is on administrative leave. Authorities said the deputy fired because Chisley moved toward him and he feared for his life.

The incident began when Chisley and his girlfriend got into an argument, she told News4. She locked Chisley out of the house, but he broke down the door, and then ran to the kitchen and grabbed a knife, she said.

As Chisley threatened to kill himself, the woman's teenage daughter called police.

"I'm depressed, I'm scared, I'm worried, I'm hoping that he's OK," the woman said.

Chisley had been charged in March with assault and resisting arrest, court records show.
