For animal shelters, the dog days of summer have a special meaning.
"The spring and summer is when a lot of animals are having litters," says Jennifer Gardner, of the Washington Humane Society. "So we're seeing a lot of kittens coming in, puppies coming in."
"People going on vacation decide they don't need their animals anymore," she says. "And on the flip side, because a lot of people are vacationing, they don't think this is really the best time to adopt either."
But she says summer can actually be a good time to adopt.
"You can get outside, start doing the leash walking, work on house breaking your animal," she says.
The Humane Society is waiving adoption fees whenever the temperatures top 100 degrees this month.
