73-Year-Old Man Struck, Killed by Street Sweeper in Northeast Washington

A 73-year-old man died Monday after he was hit by a street sweeper while it was cleaning the roadway.

The street sweeper was backing up when it struck James Gary in the 4000 block of Clay Place NE about 10:30 a.m. Gary was attempting to cross the street at the time, police said. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The street sweeper remained at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

The vehicle is owned and operated by Fort Myer Construction, a private company that the District contracts with to do road construction.

The company released a statement in which it extended its condolences to Gary's family and friends, adding that the company would not comment on the investigation while it is ongoing.
