Nearly 40 people have been arrested across northern Virginia for involvement in a drug ring targeting young people.

Police said the arrests reflect the dramatic increase in drug use among young people in the Washington suburbs.

According to the Washington Post, the drug ring utilized many young dealers, who sold large amounts of heroin and pills to high school students and young adults in Prince William and western Fairfax counties.

The arrests follow a large federal investigation in northern Virginia targeting young heroin users and dealers in Fairfax County and a series of deaths in the Manassas area from drug overdose.

Police said they knew prescription pills were a problem but said they didn't realize how many young people were transitioning to heroin use.
