Va. Man Accused of Carjacking Vehicle With 3 Children

A Springfield, Va., man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly carjacked a woman’s vehicle with three 5-year-old children in the back seat.

A man allegedly approached a woman sitting in a 2011 Nissan Maxima in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse on Lee Jackson Memorial Highway while she was waiting for a relative to finish grocery shopping, police said. The man then yelled at the woman and allegedly struck her and got into the driver’s seat of the car.

As he drove off, there were still three 5-year-old children in the back seat, police said. The man stopped the car before exiting the parking lot and told the children to get out of the vehicle, which they did, according to police. The children were not harmed.

The man then proceeded to drive the Nissan westbound on routes 28 and 50, trying to elude Fairfax County police. The suspect then lost control of the vehicle, which came to a stop in a grassy median, police said. He then got out of the car and attempted to climb a fence but was quickly apprehended by police.

Charles William Lawrence, 28, of 7505 Tralee Woods Court, was charged with carjacking, three counts of abduction and speeding to elude.

The suspect was taken to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
