FROM 2016: The NBC4 Health & Fitness Expo Marks a Start to a Healthier New Year

The 23rd Annual NBC4 Health & Fitness Expo may be over, but the journey to a healthier New Year has just begun.

On Sunday, tens of thousands flocked to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for day two of Expo, hoping to get a last-minute health screening, try out a Pilates class or become an advocate for suicide prevention.

From interactive demonstrations at the Healthy Cooking 4 You stage to fresh produce stands at the Giant Food booth, the NBC4 Health Expo offered heart-healthy options to satisfy everyone's taste buds.

The American Diabetes Association shared some quick and easy recipes and guests watched as chef and television personality Amy Riolo whipped up some spiced chickpea stew.

As parents learned how to improve  their sleeping patterns and how to recognize the first signs of a concussion, their kids went on safe athletic adventures. They reached new heights in the rock climbing arena, overcame obstacles in a biking course and tested out their backhand at the tennis courts.

The American Heart Association sponsored free CPR certifications to guests of all ages. More than 900 people were trained in hands-only CPR. The D.C. Fire & Emergency Medical Services Department offered 20-minute trainings for patrons to learn basic chest compressions and the responsibilities of a first responder.

The Kohl's Cares Community Dental Program truck was busy all weekend, as approximately 4,000 guests stopped by to learn about dental hygiene and receive screenings. Dental staff applied protective fluoride varnish treatment to the teeth of more than 40 children.

At the Kaiser Permanente station, kids got the chance to dream big. Children were inspired as they dressed up as doctors and nurses, grabbed a stethoscope and smiled for the camera.
