50 the Limit for Local Hardware Store

Competition from big box stores and a downturn in the economy has led to the downfall of a local hardware store after 50 years in business.

Mays Hardware has served the Frederick community since 1958, but has announced it will close soon, according to the Frederick News-Post.

The depth of competition in the hardware store industry was just too much for the 10-employee store to handle.

"It started with Home Depot," Karl Zimmerman, who bought the store a decade ago, told the paper. "Now Dollar General, just about any store, sells what we sell."
