The brunt of the season's biggest storm was hitting Chicago just in time for the evening commute, with around half a foot of snow already on the ground as more than 1,000 flights were canceled and hundreds of schools were closed for the day. Two extra days of school in the spring cost Montgomery County $2 million, the News4 I-Team learned.

The county used too many snow days over the winter and was forced to add extra school time to meet state requirements.

An added day on the Monday after spring break in April cost $1.5 million, and an extra day in June cost $500,000.

Costs cover buses, utilities and overtime. The April day was a state holiday, so maintenance workers and drivers got extra pay.
