About the Highway Signs Investigation

I-Team filed a FOIA request for inpsection records

The News4 I-Team filed a Freedom of Information Act Request with the Virginia Department of Transportation asking for inspection records for all highway signs and structures for the northern Virginia region. VDOT initially denied our request, citing Homeland Security concerns. After several weeks of negotiations, VDOT allowed the News4 I-Team to review the Structure and Bridge Division’s inspection reports.  We analyzed about 4,400 signs using an electronic database and physically inspected about 160 reports ranking structures in either “poor” or “serious” condition, including cantilever, overhead, bridge parapet and high mast structures.
