In breaking his silence about his son's addiction problems, Charlie Sheen's dad called his dangerous habits "a form of cancer"

"Apocalypse Now" actor Martin Sheen appeared alongside his son Emilio Estevez on Sky News to discuss the "Two and a Half Men" star's unhealthy behavior, which recently landed him in rehab.

"He's an extraordinary man," said the senior Sheen of his son. "If he had cancer, how would we treat him, you know? The disease of addiction is a form of cancer. And you have to have an equal measure of concern and love and lift them up, so that's what we do for him."

The roller coaster ride of Sheen's life has been a downward spiral the past couple of years. One of TV's highest paid and most volatile actors, Sheen's excessive partying with porn stars, cocaine, and booze landed him in the hospital twice, most recently on January 28 during a party in his Beverly Hills home.

Domestic violence accusations against the 44-year-old actor over the years have also made him a tabloid favorite.

"You get used to [the spotlight]," Estevez told Sky News about the media attention his family gets. "After 30 years, you build up an immunity, I guess."

Both father and son, award winning Hollywood stars in their own right, are in England promoting their new film, "The Way," directed by Estevez and starring both Estevez and Martin Sheen. The movie is to be released April 15.
