Wahlberg Boston Marathon Bombing ‘Patriots Day' Trailer Revealed

The film will premiere in Boston on Dec. 21 before premiering nationally

Three years after the tragedy that rocked the Boston Marathon, the first movie trailer was released recounting the horrific event.

In the upcoming film, "Patriots Day," Mark Wahlberg stars as Sgt. Tommy Saunders, a character based on several real police officers who worked security at the marathon. "Patriots Day" finished wrapping in early June, using various locations around Massachusetts, including the cities of Cambridge and Quincy, as well as the 2016 Boston Marathon finish line in Copley Square. Residents reactions to the film varied from enthusiasm to criticism, reported Boston.com.

While Wahlberg had reservations about signing onto the project initially, he ultimately believed he would be able to do the topic justice. He also said he didn't believe it was too soon for a film on the tragedy.

"It’s not soon enough," Wahlberg said at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 13. "This stuff is happening all around us."

The film will premiere in Boston on Dec. 21 prior to premiering nationally on Jan. 13, 2017.
