It’s well known that Hollywood is out of ideas. But it’s always fun to see all the bizarre ways they take old ideas and attempt to convince you they’re somehow new. And that’s how we end up with today’s strangest item: Jamie Foxx writing the screenplay to a “Laverne & Shirley” movie. Via William Keck of TV Guide:
L&S producer Garry Marshall, who was honored at the 18th Annual Night At Sardi’s Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s (his mother died of the disease), tells me the script is now being written by “Valentine’s Day” co-star Jamie Foxx.
“Jamie and I are trying to do it,” Garry confirms. “He’s writing it. It’s a whole different modern day take on how they came up on the streets during difficult times. Laverne would be this very tough girl with a big ‘L’ tattooed on her arm. Jennifer Garner would play Laverne and Jessica Biel would play Shirley.”
Wait, what? Laverne has an L tattoo? And no sweater? Is she some sort of arm wrestling champion as well? I love the fact that the reimagining of the story is dependent on the placement of a letter. “It’s totally new! This time, Shirley wears a kimono!”
Listen, I never really watched the original show (though I know the lyrics to theme song backwards and forwards), but millions of people have, and I think they’d be just fine with Laverne’s L staying where it originally was. Jamie Foxx is a talented fellow who has spent the past few years coasting on a Best Actor Oscar. I assume he’ll be either Lenny or Squiggy. Garry Marshall's best work is pretty far back in the rear view mirror. Put them together to make the film version of a classic TV how and you get… Well hey, at least Jessica Biel’s backside is involved.
