Yankees' Third Triple Play of Season Leads to Win Vs. Athletics

Yankees' third triple play of season leads to win vs. Athletics originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

A triple play is one of the rarest plays that can happen in baseball, unless it involves the 2021 New York Yankees.

On Sunday in the top of the ninth with the Oakland Athletics threatening down 2-1, the Yankees went into their bag of tricks once again to solidify a win. With runners on first and second and no outs, Aroldis Chapman induced a ground ball to third, which then went around the infield for a game-ending triple-play.

This play is incredible, but it is also becoming quite standard for New York. The season hasn't even entered July yet and this was the third time this season the Yankees have recorded three outs on one play. That ties the 2016 Chicago White Sox for the single-season record.

Even wilder, this isn't the first time a triple-play has come in the ninth inning. Earlier this season against the White Sox, the Yankees turned nearly an identical play to keep the game tied at 1-1.

New York also just turned a triple-play against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. This is just becoming part of the team's game.
