Tony Kornheiser Believes Washington Should Stick With the Football Team

Kornheiser: Stay Washington Football Team, don't try for new name originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Count Tony Kornheiser in the growing group that believe the Washington Football Team should stop looking for a new nickname.

"I like it," Kornheiser said of the simple Washington Football Team.

Speaking via his podcast, Kornheiser went onto explain that finding another nickname will only create more division around the team's name.

"Why would they change the name? Why would you give them a nickname when it’s always going to be compared, forgive me for saying this, to Redskins and it’s never going to be well-liked in the same way that that was?"

After decades of controversy Washington dropped the name Redskins this summer amid intense pressure from corporate sponsors and the threat of losing millions of dollars. In the months since, the team has claimed it's looking for a new nickname to replace the old one, but there's also reason to believe the current moniker could stick around.

In an ESPN interview last week, team president Jason Wright said that keeping the name Washington Football Team, or tweaking it to Washington Football Club, was "definitely in the running" for the franchise going forward.

Other popular names on social media include Red Wolves and Red Tails, and while Wright acknowledged both as contenders, both bring questions.

It's also important to remember that team owner Dan Snyder infamously stated in 2013 that he would "never" change the team name and as recently as this fall said how much he liked the new look and feel of the Washington Football Team.

For Kornheiser, it also looks good.

"Why wouldn’t you stay with this? It has a very old-time look to it."
