Report: Eric Reid turned down practice squad offer from Washington originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Once the Washington Football Team lost safety Landon Collins for the year due to a torn Achilles, signing Eric Reid as his replacement seemed like a logical fit.
However, a reunion between Reid and head coach Ron Rivera is not happening just yet. Reid was offered a spot on Washington's practice squad, according to Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press, but the veteran safety reportedly declined the offer.
Reid, who turns 29 in December, played the past two seasons under Rivera in Carolina. His 2019 season was arguably the best of his career outside of his rookie year, as he finished with career highs in tackles (130) and sacks (four).
He's been a free agent since March, when Carolina released him.
Last month, Rivera was asked about the possibility of signing Reid. The head coach said Washington was not a logical fit for the safety, as the team had a healthy Collins at the time, but said otherwise he would have seriously considered bringing Reid in.
"We’re in a fortunate position where we have Landon Collins. A guy like Eric Reid wouldn’t fit us here. But if we didn’t [have Collins], believe me, I’d call him," Rivera said. "I think [Reid's] a guy that has the ability to play in this league and hopefully, if somebody needs a strong safety, he’s a guy they would call."
Washington has elevated practice squad safety Jeremy Reaves to its active roster to replace Collins.
