Alex Smith moved to backup QB after Dwayne Haskins benching originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Major news for the Washington Football Team with quarterback Dwayne Haskins going to the bench four games into the season.
That means Kyle Allen will start this week against Los Angeles, and perhaps most incredibly, Alex Smith will be the backup quarterback.
It was almost two years ago Smith sustained a compound fracture of his right tibia and fibula, and that injury nearly cost Smith his leg, and his life. He was hospitalized for months after the wound suffered an infection and Smith underwent 17 surgeries to fix the problem.
For well over a year few people thought Smith would play football again. Except Smith, who kept working hard in his recovery.
Eventually he continued to surprise and impress, and made the Washington active roster coming out of training camp this year.
Now, for the first time this season, Smith will be dressed on game day against the Rams. That means he's one step away from game action.
With Washington at 1-3 but with a stretch of winnable games on the docket, maybe the team will go to Smith if Allen struggles.
Smith has more starting experience than Allen and Haskins combined. Smith has played in playoff games and the Super Bowl, and way back in 2018, had Washington 6-3 before he broke his leg.
