Cutler to the Skins? Depends Who You Believe

Rumors swirl about Redskins QB situation

Whenever there is a disgruntled star in the NFL, the rumors of a trade to Washington always swirl.

The latest is Jay Cutler, who isn't happy with the way he's being treated by his new coach in Denver.

If you read the Post's Jason Reid on Redskins' Insider on Tuesday, you'd be under the impression that the Redskins aren't interested:

Just got a text from Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, who wrote that there's no truth to an Internet report that the team is actively pursuing a trade for disgruntled Denver quarterback Jay Cutler.

Well if Vinny said it, ya gotta believe it's true, right?

Not if you then picked up the Examiner on Wednesday and read the following:

The Redskins have serious interest in Denver quarterback Jay Cutler, an NFL source said Tuesday, and have entered talks about a possible three-way deal to acquire him.

Two NFL sources confirmed the possibility of a three-way trade, with Kansas City being mentioned by one source as a possibility.

Hmmm, OK then. So which is it?

Are the Redskins really unhappy with Jason Campbell? The Examiner's "source" says yes:

"They don’t trust Jason Campbell.”

The facts: Campbell is in the final year of his contract. With so much money handed out to free agents this offseason, can the Redskins wait for their quarterback to develop for yet another year? The urge to win seems to be all-consuming for the franchise this season.

Cutler, on the other hand, signed a six-year deal in 2006. So he's locked up. But he's also a heavy cap hit. He'd count for $7.5 million against the cap this season. So some others would have to move to free up some space, including Campbell.

The Examiner also suggests that Broncos tight end Tony Scheffler also could head to Washington in the trade. What would that mean for Chris Cooley? Could Captain Chaos get the boot?

So many questions, so few answers.

But one thing is for sure. There's never a dull moment at Redskins Park. Pass along any other rumors you're hearing in the comments below...
