Thies: D.C. Special Election Odds and Ends

The special election for at-large D.C. Council is Tuesday. All precincts citywide will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Early voting is under way. You can cast a ballot at the Board of Elections (441 4th St. NW) from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Saturday.

This election has, at times, been odd. And soon it ends.

As such, here are some odds and ends.

Paul Zukerberg entered the race as a long shot, campaigning to decriminalize marijuana. His candidacy picked up greater meaning after he was featured in a Washington Post editorial. Zukerberg took on the Board of Elections and prevailed.

Patrick Mara, who has been hammered by Democratic opponents for being a Republican, is supported and defended on Twitter by @adamlbarr. Adam Barr is the founder of “DC for Obama.”

Elissa Silverman had the biggest flip-flop of the race. She previously stated emphatically that Mayor Vince Gray should resign. Now she says he should not.

Anita Bonds has an amazing ability to recover from illness. She opted out of an 11 a.m. televised debate because of a “virus,” but in the evening on the same day, Bonds was hosting a campaign event.

Perry Redd has been a songwriter since 1984.

Matthew Frumin was a member of Bill Clinton’s “Saxophone Club.”

The winner of the special election will serve on the D.C. Council through Jan. 2, 2015.

Please vote.

NOTE: I am voting for Patrick Mara. I am also hoping the Washington Post will fix, in print, what it broke in print. So far, they have not.
