Sotomayor Sworn In as Supreme Court Justice

    Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as the Supreme Court's first Hispanic justice Saturday with her mother by her side in a historic ceremony broadcast live across the nation.

    Sotomayor took the second of two oaths of office from Chief Justice John Roberts after a private swearing in earlier. She stood with her left hand on a Bible held by her mother, Celina, and the two warmly embraced after the brief ceremony.

    Sotomayor, who was confirmed by the Senate 68-31, is only the third woman and first Latina to sit on the high court in the court's 220-year history, the Associated Press reported.

    The 55-year-old from the Bronx, N.Y. will replace David Souter on the court.
