Official confirmation is expected to come from director Matthew Wilder at the Cannes Film Festival, which begins May 12. Shields said Wilder had contacted him to shoot promos for the film, according to The Money Times.

Razaqui said the role will be a tough one. Linda) was so battered and beat up emotionally, that I think it’s gonna take everything Lindsay has to really be able to pull it off,” the producer told the Times.

“Inferno” is one of two films in the planning stages and based on the life of the porn star, who turned anti-porn activist before her death in 2002.

Another film, “Lovelace,” previously had Courtney Love in the role.

Lohan, 23, has seen her career falter amid reports she is partying herself out of contention for big roles. Her last big role was in 2004's "Mean Girls," and she has not been in a movie at all since 2007's "I know Who Killed Me."

Lovelace, whose real name was Linda Boreman, was just 23, like Lohan, when the landmark porn film "Deep Throat" came out in 1972. The daughter of a New York cop, she grew up in a strict Catholic household, but later became involved with Chuck Traynor, who she said became her manager and pimp as well as husband.

Lovelace said Traynor forced her to do low budget porn films, including ones involving bestiality, at gunpoint. She said she received just $1,250 for her effort in "Deep Throat."

Lovelace divorced Traynor, denounced pornography, remarried and had children before developing hepatitis and requiting a liver transplant. She died in 2002 from injuries suffered in a car accident in Denver.
