28-Year-Old Woman From New York Dies in 200-Foot Fall at National Park

A 28-year-old woman originally from Westchester County died along with a 27-year-old woman when the two fell about 200 feet while trying to climb a mountain in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park over the weekend, authorities say.

The bodies of Catherine Nix, originally from Port Chester, and Tyler Strandberg, originally from North Carolina, were found on a rocky ledge about 11,500 feet up after the 11 a.m. accident Saturday on the 12,300-foot Teewinot Mountain, the sixth-tallest peak in the Teton Range.

Both women most recently lived in Jackson, Wyoming.

A third member of the climbing party, 26-year-old Rebecca Anderson, also of Jackson, was rescued unhurt from a small ledge.

The three women were trying to climb the East Face of the mountain and were well off the preferred route when the two fell, officials said.

The Park Service says they weren't using ropes at the time.
