Washington County, Md., Adding More Officers in Schools

Washington County public school officials announced plans Tuesday to add two resource officers to the seven already working in the schools, reports the Herald-Mail of Hagerstown.

The positions will be added in the next school year. Meanwhile, the Allegany County school board is considering hiring more officers and mental health professionals.

Board members postponed a budget vote Tuesday to secure funding to increase the number of school police officers from four to nine. The vote is now scheduled for March 19.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that Superintendent David Cox also wants to hire two mental health counselors. He says security guards are just part of a comprehensive plan for protecting students and school employees.
