VRE, Amtrak Service Disrupted Friday

Coal train derailment forces the cancellation of some trains

An important alert if you take Amtrak or the Virginia Railway Express.

Amtrak service south of Washington was disrupted Friday, and all Virginia Railway Express Fredericksburg Line trains were canceled after a coal train derailed just south of Quantico on Thursday, causing all tracks to be blocked.

Amtrak announced at 2 p.m. Friday that all of its service was resuming with the exception of Saturday's Silver Star (Train #92, Miami to New York). The Silver Meteor (Train #98) will accommodate those passengers.

The Amtrak disruptions affected trains running between Washington and Newport News, Va., and from New York to Miami, Charlotte, N.C., and Savannah, Ga.  Auto train service between Lorton, Va., and Sanford, Fla., also was affected. Limited alternate transportation was available on some routes.

VRE canceled all trains on the Fredericksburg Line for Friday.  All trains on the Manassas Line are running as scheduled.

Check with Amtrak or VRE for the latest service updates.
