Virginia Teachers Protest Low Pay at State Capitol Rally

Virginia teachers are marching to pressure state lawmakers for pay raises and other increases in school funding.

Thousands of teachers and supporters from around Virginia rallied at the state capitol in Richmond on Monday to protest what they're calling unfairly low pay and inadequate education spending.

Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam has proposed a pay raise among other spending measures, saying Virginia's teacher pay lags behind the national average and it's getting harder to recruit and retain quality teachers.

Facebook asked users to add their phone numbers as an extra security measure, but now users are learning their numbers are being used as a way to look up their profiles and even target them with ads, without the option to opt out. TechCrunch first reported the feature after Jeremy Burge, who runs the site Emojipedia, called it out in a tweet on Friday. While users can hide their phone number from the general public and restrict who can look them up by phone number by switching the setting from "everyone" to "friends of friends" or just "friends," Facebook does not give the option to get rid of the look-up option entirely.

Republican leaders in the GOP-controlled General Assembly say they too support increased education spending but have yet to introduce their proposals.

Virginia's teachers are joining a national movement calling for more education spending that began last spring in West Virginia and scored a major victory last week after a teachers' strike in Los Angeles.
