A teenager who prosecutors said was an MS-13 gang member who ambushed and killed the wrong target was sentenced to life in prison with 15 additional years in Prince George's County, Maryland on Friday.
Fernando Baires was 17 years old when he was charged in a 2017 double shooting ambush in Chillum. He allegedly had two accomplices who were 16, when he ambushed two men in an apartment complex on Riggs Road, northeast of Washington, D.C.
The ambush shooting injured one person and killed 22-year-old Gamaliel Rico. That surviving victim allegedly had rival gang ties in his home country and was the target of the ambush, but the shooting ended up killing his friend.
According to prosecutors, all three suspects were gang members and the victims had run into the suspects at the Galaxy night club on Riggs Road. The two victims later returned to nearby apartments, where they found the suspects waiting for them and shot them. The surviving victim was shot at least six times, but survived.
