Suspect Arrested in Memorial Day Weekend Double Homicide

Police arrested a man suspected of killing a couple in southwest D.C. Saturday evening.

Investigators believe 33-year-old Alonzo Lewis shot and killed Jaquon Helm, 40, and Venius Badgett, 35, in the unit block of Galveston Street SW following an argument.

The shooting appears to have taken place in the courtyard of an apartment complex where children play. Emergency medical supplies littered the area, and bullet holes could be seen in a wall.

Neighbors said there was a dispute in the parking lot as the couple drove into the neighborhood.

Helm was pronounced dead at the scene. Badgett, 35, died at a hospital.

Helm's friend, Ward 8 Council member Trayvon White, said he was a youth sports coach and community leader.

Badgett was a Prince George's County school bus driver, the school district confirmed.

Lewis was charged with two counts of first-degree murder while armed.

The Memorial Day weekend was marred by gun violence in D.C., with 13 people shot — four fatally — in 11 separate incidents.
