Rockville Formalize Police Approach to Immigration Law

Rockville City Council passed an amendment to a city ordinance that bars city police or any city employee from checking a person’s legal status unless specifically required by law.

The measure passed 3-2 in a vote late Monday night. The wording of the ordinance specifically does not use the term sanctuary city.

Previously, the Rockville City Police Department did not have a formal police on how officers interacted with people with regards to federal immigration status.

The change to bring clarity to the ordinance was introduced by Councilmember Julie Palakovich Carr and adds a section to the city’s human rights code.
