No Hazardous Materials in Suspicious Car Near Dupont

Police say a man driving around Dupont Circle and behaving erratically Monday afternoon is undergoing a mental evaluation.

People in the area reported a man driving erratically and yelling from a black Honda Civic with signs and stickers -- some referencing Sept. 11, 2001 -- about 3 p.m. Monday, News4’s Jackie Bensen reported. One sign read "Death to Capitalism," bicyclist Jen House told News4.

Police took a man believed to be the driver in to custody after locating the car on R Street between New Hampshire Avenue and 17th Street. However, no charges had been filed as of Monday evening.

Several of what appear to be gas cans and propane canisters were visible inside the car, which prompted police to close several streets in the area and evacuate Ross Elementary School and an apartment building as a precaution, Bensen reported.

No hazardous materials were found in the car, according to D.C. police.

The Secret Service was at the scene.
