Chance of Severe Storms Through Evening

Strong storms possible Tuesday afternoon

Periods of moderate and heavy rain are moving through the region Tuesday along with a chance of strong storms producing damaging winds and hail.

Tuesday evening may bring more isolated strong storms with thunder and lightning. The severe weather risk could remain until about 9 p.m., with rain continuing until about 11 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning for Prince George's, Charles and Anne Arundel counties in Maryland expired at 10:15 p.m.

There were scattered storms and showers -- some with lightning -- south and southwest of D.C. beginning late Tuesday afternoon and continuing into the evening. Heavy rain fell in the area Tuesday morning.

The rain deficit for 2012 so far is about five inches, and into Wednesday, we will likely see rain totals of one to two inches in the region.

Wednesday should start sunny and dry before a bit more rain could move through the area later in the day. There could be a few showers south of D.C. and possibly isolated storms, but severe weather is not expected.

Thursday should be sunny with low humidity.
