Montgomery County Approves Ambulance Transport Fee

The Montgomery County Council has approved a measure for emergency medical services transport fees.

The council voted 5-4 Wednesday in favor of County Executive Isiah Leggett's proposal, officials said. The bill allows the county to charge people transported by county ambulances between $300 and $800, depending on the level of care they need. Patients also will get charged $8.50 per mile of the trip.

For most residents with health insurance, their insurance companies will be billed, officials said. Those without insurance will be able to apply for a fee waiver.

The council has rejected past attempts to impose the fee, which could raise almost $13 million yearly for the county, officials said.

The fees could go into effect by July 1.
