Man Shot, Killed by Police After Injuring Officer With Sword, Authorities Say

A man in Virginia was shot and killed by police after seriously injuring an officer with a sword, authorities said.

It happened about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday in Timberville, about half an hour west of Luray. Town police were called to a home in the 600 block of Lone Pine Drive for what state police called "an ongoing domestic situation."

A Timberville police officer arrived to find 50-year-old Michael S. Norquest barricaded inside, police said. When the officer was able to get inside, Norquest assaulted him with a sword, according to state police.

The officer then shot Norquest, who died at the scene.

The officer was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries. He has since been released.

Norquest's body has been taken to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for exam and autopsy.

At the request of Timberville's police chief, Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.
