Man Shot By Police Called 911, Reported Fake Shooting

Police say a 15-year-old girl who had run away from home was found in the man's car.

An 18-year-old man was shot by Manassas City police officers Friday after he reported his SUV had been involved in a shooting that police later determined never happened.

Police say the man called 911 at 12:40 a.m. Friday and reported a shooting in the area of Grant Avenue. He then gave the dispatcher a description of the SUV he was driving.

Officers responding to the call, saw the SUV and tried to pull the driver over, but the man kept driving into Prince William County. 

During the pursuit, police say the man hit two police cruisers. 

Police followed the man into at George Hellwig Memorial Park, where he hit a tree and a light post before coming to a stop. 

At some point, there was a confrontation and the driver was shot by police. A replica BB gun was recovered at the scene. 

The driver was flown to the hospital with serious injuries.

A 15-year-old girl who was inside the SUV was not injured. Police later determined the was a runaway from the Woodbridge area and reunited her with her family. 

Police have not said why the girl was with the unidentified suspect or why he contacted 911. 

Due to the location of the shooting, Prince William County police say they are investigating the "criminal aspect of the shooting." Manassas City police will handle the administrative aspect.
