Hundreds of Md. IDs Went to People With Fake Credentials

Maryland auditors say nearly 600 fraudulent and questionable driver's licenses and identification cards meant for undocumented immigrants have been issued by the state.

The Washington Post reported Friday that it's unclear who received the fraudulent documents that were meant for undocumented immigrants, who have been eligible for credentials in Maryland since 2014.

The Office of Legislative Audits said in a report that some Motor Vehicle Administration employees failed to check whether state-issued verification numbers were valid for the individuals they were serving.

Officials discovered the problem through a 2016 internal investigation after an employee reported suspicious activity by two colleagues. The two workers have since been fired and referred to authorities.

Motor Vehicle Administration officials say the agency determined who the fraudulent documents were issued to and canceled them.
