Firefighters Rescue Man Dangling From Flag Pole

71-year-old man was stuck for 20 minutes

RICHMOND, Va. -- Firefighters on Monday rescued a contractor who fell and was left dangling from a flagpole about 75 feet off the ground at a Henrico County auto dealership.

Police said 71-year-old Paul Reed of Sandston was changing a cable on the 105-foot pole Monday afternoon when his rope-and-board seating rig slipped. As he fell, the seat became wedged at his shoulders and stopped his descent.

Reed dangled for about 20 minutes before firefighters used a bucket ladder to rescue him.

Curtis Wells, sales manager at Pearson Chrysler Jeep Mazda, said everyone clapped when they knew Reed was safe.

Reed said he plans to keep climbing until he's 75.
