FBI Hopes to Get Ahead of Spike in Bank Robberies During Holiday Season

The FBI is hoping to get ahead of an expected spike in bank robberies during the holiday season.

According to Special Agent Timothy Gallagher with the FBI Washington Field Office, there are triple as many bank robberies and hold-ups in the month of December than any other time of the year.

The D.C. field office is teaming up with local law enforcement to increase patrols at banks, as well as work with tellers on common tactics robbers use.

"We have data for the last 10 years and we can look back and say that certain banks tend to get hit more than others," Gallagher said.

"We need the help of the community, so if you see something that doesn't look near a bank, report it to us, report it to local law enforcement. If they could help us solve one bank robbery in Virginia, it may help us close some other ones," he explained.
