A former District of Columbia police sergeant was sentenced Friday for bilking an 85-year-old D.C. resident out of $40,000. She met the victim while investigating a crime.
A D.C. Superior Court judge sentenced Aisha Hackley, 36, to 18 months in prison. She pleaded guilty in August.
Police said Hackley met the victim in December 2010 during a fraud investigation. The victim reported that her bank account was being targeted by a lottery fraud scam.
Instead of helping her, Hackley began stealing from the woman’s bank account herself, police said. All told, 14 checks were made payable to Hackley or a relative totaling $40,005.
Investigators said the victim suffers from short-term memory loss and was not aware of what was happening.
“This sentence is just punishment for Sergeant Hackley’s exploitation of one of the citizens she had sworn to protect,” U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. said. “We will continue to pursue justice and full restitution for our senior citizens, who are far too often robbed of their life savings through fraud, deceit and trickery.”
As part of her plea agreement, Hackley resigned from the force in August and has paid full restitution.
