Virginia drivers can now give the Department of Motor Vehicles the names of two people to contact in case of an emergency.
The DMV's Emergency Contact Program was authorized by the General Assembly last year. It gives police a way to notify a person's family or friends in case of a serious crash or other incident that leaves the person unable to communicate.
The service is available to residents with a valid Virginia driver's license, ID card, learner's permit, commercial driver's license or temporary license. Parents wo would like to enroll a child under 15 must first obtain a child ID card.
The DMV says it securely stores the contact information and makes it available only for use by law enforcement in an emergency.
