Arlington Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Theo Stamos says seeking a fourth death sentence for 42-year-old Alfredo Prieto doesn't justify the expense. Prosecutors could re-indict Prieto if he wins his appeals in the other cases.
The indictment charged Prieto in the May 1988 rape and murder of Veronica Jefferson behind a school in Arlington.
Preito was sentenced to death earlier this year for the December 1988 slayings of Warren Fulton and Rachel Raver in Reston.
All three murders were linked to Prieto in 2005 when his DNA was added to a California database. He was on death row there for the 1990 rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl.
